The organization was formed originated from the chat some geography students UMS, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta and IKIP student in geography at the regional seminar in July 1987 UMS. The idea was sparked from a desire to forge closer ties between fellow students of geography in the country. This relates to communication, information exchange, and more intensive cooperation. At the seminar held regional planning science students at UGM on August 24, 1987, ideas for geography students gather in an established organization discussed again. After generating a unanimous agreement, finally on 27 September 1987 IMAHAGI successfully realized.
Stewardship IMAHAGI at that time consisted only of formation only, as an initial step for the birth of an organization that is expected to do much in accordance with the motivations of its founder. The next step successfully held a meeting of student geography of Indonesia on 2 to 3 April 1998 in the campus of the University of Indonesia, Jakarta. The meeting is at the starting point for the formation of the composition of the board IMAHAGI the period 1987 to 1989. The first successful stewardship activities embody the realization of the various work programs such as Student Seminar by the Commissariat IMAHAGI Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta with the theme: "Supply Board for the Group Weak Economy Towards 2000", pre-Congress Meetings I and II, Student Seminar, and the Dies Natalis II IMAHAGI by the Commissariat IKIP Yogyakarta, as well as a variety of improvements and additions to routine meeting organizational assets.
Recent events and is the largest event of this period is the stewardship of the Second Congress on November 13 to 16, 1989 in Bandung IKIP. The event was enlivened by the Public Lecture by geography experts, panel discussions, and the selection board of the period 1989 to 1991. The new board was sworn in on November 16, 1989 by Dean FPIPS IKIP Bandung. Preparation of work program in a working meeting for the stewardship of this period held on February 17 to 18, 1990 at UGM campus. In the two years period has been successfully implementing stewardship activities, both passive and active. Passive activities include attending various activities aimed at the invitation IMAHAGI, while activities include active forms of activity are directly carried out by IMAHAGI
